Joshua Tree Off-Grid Solar ADU

ConstructionJoshua Tree, CA

Set on a sprawling 10-acre parcel in the high desert of Joshua Tree, this 2023 project was an exercise in complete utility independence, transforming raw desert terrain into a fully habitable, solar-powered ADU retreat.

Off-Grid Infrastructure

  • 375-foot deep water well drilled to service the full 10-acre property — completely off municipal lines.
  • Full on-site septic system installed for independent waste processing.

The ADU Conversion

  • 30-foot RV converted into a permanent ADU on a poured concrete foundation slab.
  • Full unit and utility shed hardwired into a self-sustaining solar array.

Desert Hardscaping & Carpentry

  • Wrap-around deck built into the Mojave terrain with reclaimed railroad tie staircase.
  • Dedicated sunset observation deck with panoramic Joshua Tree valley views.

Initial excavation and trenching

Initial grading and trenching for the septic system and massive 375-foot deep water well.

Deep utility trenching across the desert property

Deep utility trenches dug to route water and off-grid power across the robust 10-acre property footprint.

Concrete foundation forming with rebar grid

Forming and rebar grid placement for the heavy-duty concrete slab designed to support the 30-foot ADU and outbuildings.

Completed concrete pad with ADU placement in the desert

Finished concrete foundation slab bearing the weight of the converted ADU, anchored entirely off-grid.

Custom wood slat privacy fencing around the ADU

Custom horizontal slat privacy walls constructed to shield the fully-powered ADU from high-desert wind and visibility.

Reclaimed railroad tie steps traversing the desert hill

Custom staircase built natively into the hillside using reclaimed railroad ties, leading to the designated "Margarita Hangout" spot.

Steel framing and construction of the observation deck

Steel and timber framing phase of the massive wrap-around observation deck overlooking the valley.

Completed observation deck shading structure looking out over Joshua Tree

The final sunset observation deck spanning the rugged terrain, fully shaded and integrated into the desert landscape.
